Not sure how the squad numbers work. Roar have 13 out and 7 in yet only 2 spots for full squad. Can you explain? Plus FFA was calling for more marque players. Who are they across the a-league? Last year we only really heard about Yorke and the chinese guy for Adelaide. Was Ned one and why did he leave Newcastle?

The maximum squad size is 20 players. The reason for the 4-player discrepancy (I think: some tricky maths here) is that (a) Shin retired to become a coach and thus opened up an extra place in the squad, (b) more than 20 players were signed during the previous season due to the releases of Dodd, Jordan Simpson and, at one point, Gava, and (c) I left out McLaren, who should be considered an 'in' -- he signed full-time this season after obtaining just a short-term deal last year. Thanks for noticing!

Hopefully that tallies correctly. It's the short-term injury replacement signings that create all the problems. Queensland Roar used at least 23 players last year. (It could have been more. I'm not sure that Griffin ever sat on the bench?) The replacement policy is really just a stop gap solution to overcome problematic salary cap issues, which one day should become alleviated.

As for marquees, your guess is as good as mine. As far as I am aware, Yorke is now the sole marquee in the league. The FFA has been quiet on the issue of late. Perhaps it's more important to balance accounts in the red before making any more big name/large contract signings. Having said that, Adelaide still seem keen on making a marquee signing and it looks like Shengqing Qu will return to fill that void.

Zelic was a marquee, but -- and I may stand to be corrected here -- it seems that his replacement (Paul Okon) is not. Zelic hasn't left Newcastle yet. He's supposedly searching for a new club and until he finds one remains on the books with the Jets. Stay tuned.

The Zelic thing is interesting. Perhaps the Nic has more bagage than Reedy. The game I saw Zelic in last year he looked slow. I'll be surprised if he is picked up elsewhere. But then again so did Yorke in the game I saw.

At this stage only Sydney FC is looking strong. I don't see the point of Australia football having a Machester/Chelsea that sweeps all before. Better to be like rugby league where 7 different teams win the premiership in 7 years. then again if it was the Roar I would be happy. Australian football needs them winning in Brisbane and Melbourne winning in Melbourne. Grounds of 10,000 to 15,000 capacity make the other teams irrelevant. Particularly if FFA is chasing seat sales.

Number one job in Australia could be coming up. Leading the 2018 bid for Frank. or even just being on the team. Got your hand up?

Isn't it Josh McCloughan, not John?
