It's Uruguay...

-- Break in regular transmission --

Recoba, Forlan, Montero, Carini, Zalayeta, Morales ... it's going to be a tough fight for Australia's quest to qualify for the 2006 World Cup Finals in Germany.

No goals for Dwight Yorke, but Stern John is going off at the moment. It sucks: 4th place in CONCACAF Trinidad & Tobago plays 5th place in Asia Bahrain, while 1st place in Oceania Australia plays 5th place in South America, and previous World Cup winners, Uruguay.

We've been screwed by FIFA for decades. They better give us a favourable referee ;-)

You have the last leg this time. Oceania should have one assured place in the world cup, but not at the cost of one less place for South America as they wanted.
Anyway, it'll be a tough fight for both.

It's hard to imagine it not being a closely fought contest over both legs. If we keep Uruguay goalless for the first-half of the firt leg, I think we'll obtain a slight advantage...

Anyhow, I suck at predictions so will not jinx the lads by making one now.

I'm not sure Oceania ever lobbied against the 4.5 World Cup spots allocated to the South American federation. I think we simply lobbied FIFA to give us a full allocation. By doing so we were able to avoid playing a South American team in order to qualify. Unfortunately, we deservedly lost the spot due to the incompetence of our administration. They've all been sacked. We have a new corporate identity running the show and we've just switched to the Asian federation, so this will be the last time we play against South American opposition in a World Cup qualifier. It would be poetic, don't you think, that we finally qualify this time?
